We're Seeing Stripes!

Happy Tuesday!

We ended the last post with a picture of our two story brick house.  We love this house, but it is 20 years old.  This 20 year old house has 20 year old gold light fixtures (which are not our style), green carpet in the master bedroom, pink carpet in one of the guest rooms, etc., etc., etc. Eric and I have had many discussions as to where to start in this house when it comes to DIY projects.  We finally decided that it made the most sense to start in our front entryway since that is what people see first when they walk into our house.  We are all about first impressions!  We unfortunately didn't take a proper "before" picture of our entire hallway, but just so you get the gist, here is the wall that is important for this post:

With this picture, you get a sneak peek of our wall colors, but try to imagine this wall being plain white with this massive picture of framed fruit. Eck.
It's not exactly a pretty picture in your head I'm sure...or at least it wasn't a pretty picture in our heads.  We obviously took this picture frame down (there are ideas spinning in our heads about what to do with this picture/frame) to clear the wall.  After staring at an empty wall for God knows how long, we decided to mosey on over to our local Lowe's and look at some paint samples.  We looked at grays, browns/tans, mauves, and sunburnt oranges, but we ultimately ended up with going the brown/tan route.  We knew we wanted to paint stripes on the wall in our entryway and we knew we wanted two colors that were similar to each other (one lighter, one darker), so we went with Olympic One 124-fl oz. Interior Satin Latex-Base Paint and Primer in One with Mildew-Resistant Finish in the color Treasure Map (this was our decided lighter color) and a quart of Valspar Interior Satin Paint in the color Lyndhurst Timber (this was our decided darker color).

Our first step was to tape off and paint the wall pictured above in Treasure Map.

There isn't a noticeable difference in color in this picture since I took these pictures with my iPad (Note to self: Use the camera for taking pictures of DIY projects instead of the iPad).
After painting this wall and letting it dry for a good 24 hours, we started on the stripes, which we painted in Lyndhurst Timber. Our puppy, Buckeye watched intently from the sidelines. :)

We had to decide on how many stripes we wanted and how thick or thin we wanted them. After rummaging through my Pinterest boards, we decided we wanted seven thick stripes.  While searching other blogs for information on painting stripes, I came across a blogger who said there was some designer theory behind why you should always paint stripes in an odd number, so seven is what we ended up with!  Our wall is 97" tall.  We plan on putting up thicker base board and crown molding, so in order to make the stripes all look the same size, we made the stripe on the very bottom 16" and the stripe on the top 16" (a part of these two stripes will be covered up with either base board or crown molding which is why we made them thicker than the rest of the stripes).  The rest of the stripes on the wall are 13".  Here's our breakdown:

Here is our break-down on materials used for this project:

9-pc. Roller Kit: $14.99
Qt. Valspar Satin Paint: $13.98
Gl. Olympic One Satin Paint: $26.74
Frogtape: $9.88

Total: $55.71

We quite love our striped wall.  We think it adds character and it definitely gives our front entryway a more modern feel.  I will leave you with a sneak peek of what's to come (Hint: Those stripes are really poppin'!):

Have you striped out a wall?  If so, what colors did you choose to use?  We think varied shades of gray would be rockin' as well!  Do you live in a 20 year old house and are trying to update it?  What projects have you gotten into? We'd love to hear! :)
